Nigeria can’t return to petroleum subsidy, it was a scam – Orji Kalu

Senator Orji Uzor-Kalu has said Nigeria must not return to the petroleum subsidy era, describing it as “a very big scam.”

Speaking at his Igbere home on Tuesday, the former Abia State governor noted that the Federal Government should rather subsidise food and agriculture to ease the hardship caused by subsidy removal.

“President Tinubu has done very well in the last two years. I’m not playing politics,” Kalu said, urging Nigerians to support the administration’s efforts to rebuild the economy.

He acknowledged the lingering effects of global inflation and COVID-19, which he said could take 10 to 15 years to overcome. “No president in the world wants to punish the people,” he added.

Kalu, who is not part of Tinubu’s economic team, commended efforts to stabilise the exchange rate and stressed that the economy, though improving, needs time to reflect on the common man.

“Our duty is to Nigeria and to work for the country,” he said.
