Nigeria denies report claiming Tinubu planned meeting with US Vice President

The Nigerian government has dismissed reports alleging that President Bola Tinubu is set to visit the United States for a closed-door meeting with US Vice President J.D. Vance.

According to The Guardian’s reporting, the Nigerian government has denied claims that President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to travel to the United States for a private meeting with US Vice President J.D. Vance.

In a statement posted on X on Monday, Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, described the report as “misleading.” He noted that if Tinubu were to visit Washington, he would meet with President Donald Trump, not the Vice President. “There’s a story that President Tinubu is going to the U.S. on Tuesday to see U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. That story is not true,” Ajayi stated.

The clarification follows Trump’s post on Truth Social warning that the US might “go in guns blazing” if Nigeria fails to stop the alleged killing of Christians.

In response, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to religious freedom, stating, “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.” He added that the government continues to engage religious leaders across faiths to promote peace and tackle insecurity nationwide.
