Nigeria hit as US embassies reduce communications during shutdown

U.S. embassies worldwide, including in Nigeria, have reduced routine communications amid a U.S. federal funding shutdown, suspending non-urgent updates while maintaining essential services.

United States embassies and consulates globally have announced a scaling back of routine public communications as Washington remains in a funding-induced shutdown.

In notices shared on their official channels, the missions stated that regular updates will be “suspended until full operations resume,” with exceptions only for matters of urgent safety and security. They added that “scheduled passport and visa services would continue as the situation permits.”

Several embassies — including those in Nigeria, Ghana, London, and Bangladesh — have made similar announcements. Nigeria, in particular, is affected by the reduced flow of consular information and advisories to its citizens.

The communication restrictions follow a nationwide U.S. federal shutdown triggered by a budget impasse between the Republican leadership and opposition Democrats. The shutdown took effect at midnight after lawmakers failed to reach agreement, and President Trump has warned of possible mass federal worker layoffs amid the standoff.
