“This milestone is more than just a number. It is a symbol of Nigeria’s digital maturity…”
LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigeria has achieved a historic digital breakthrough, recording 1 terabit per second (1Tbps) in Internet traffic for the first time, according to the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN). CEO Muhammed Rudman revealed the milestone in Lagos on Tuesday, citing it as a “symbol of Nigeria’s digital maturity.”
“This milestone is more than just a number… a catalyst, enabling millions of Nigerians to enjoy faster, more affordable, and resilient internet connectivity,” Rudman said.
Growth from just 10 Mbps in 2008 to 1Tbps in 2025 reflects expanded local infrastructure and rising demand. Global tech giants like Google, Facebook, and Netflix are now locally connected, cutting data costs and improving latency.
Despite the success, Rudman noted serious gaps: “Some states with populations in the millions lack a single network with an ASN. That is a crisis.”
He urged collaboration to fix infrastructural gaps and called the milestone just the beginning. “Let’s work together to solve this,” he appealed.
