Nigeria Immigration Service warns citizens against overstaying and violating U.S. visa terms, citing risk of deportation and future travel bans.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a travel advisory warning Nigerian citizens to strictly comply with U.S. visa regulations amid heightened concerns from American immigration authorities.

In a statement signed by ACI AS Akinlabi, the Service PRO, the NIS cautioned that visa misuse—including overstaying, misrepresentation, or unauthorized changes in status—could result in visa revocation, deportation, or permanent bans.

“The U.S. Government has expressed concern over the improper use of visas by some Nigerian nationals,” the advisory reads.

Students were especially warned to maintain full academic status, as withdrawal or chronic absenteeism could invalidate their visas.

The advisory also flagged concerns over “birth tourism,” where applicants allegedly seek to deliver babies in the U.S. for citizenship purposes.

The NIS noted it is engaging with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to prevent wider visa restrictions.

“Maintaining compliance with visa regulations is essential to preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s international mobility,” the statement emphasized.
