The Nigerian government is working with Turkish authorities to ensure the safe return of a baby gorilla intercepted at Istanbul Airport on December 22, 2024. The animal, illegally smuggled from Nigeria and en route to Thailand, was discovered during routine checks. Officials stress that trafficking endangered species violates both Nigerian and international laws, including CITES regulations.

Authorities, including the Federal Ministry of Environment, have launched an investigation to track those responsible. Nigeria has pledged to strengthen border surveillance and commended Turkey for intercepting the illegal wildlife trade.
