The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed US Senator Ted Cruz’s sanctions bill, rejecting claims that officials are complicit in Christian killings as “malicious, contrived lies.”

The Presidency has dismissed allegations by US Senator Ted Cruz that Nigerian officials are complicit in the killing of Christians, calling the claims false and inflammatory.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, described Cruz’s assertions as “malicious, contrived lies,” insisting Nigeria is not facing a religious war. “Boko Haram terrorists attack everyone, farmers, soldiers, and villagers, while bandits in the North-West even kill Muslims in mosques. Christians are not targeted. Nigeria enjoys religious harmony,” he wrote on X.

Cruz recently introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, proposing sanctions against Nigerian officials and urging the US Secretary of State to classify Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.”

President Tinubu also dismissed the allegations, stating in Owerri that “no religion is under threat” and that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity.

Cruz’s bill remains stalled in Washington amid a wider legislative gridlock.
