UNHCR reports Nigeria is hosting over 109,000 refugees and asylum seekers, with plans to shift toward sustainable, government-led solutions for displaced communities.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has disclosed that Nigeria is currently hosting more than 109,000 asylum seekers and refugees from at least 41 countries, the majority originating from the Lake Chad Basin region.
In its 2023–2025 multi-year strategy report, UNHCR noted that Nigeria has become a country of origin, transit, and destination, while grappling with challenges such as poverty, inflation, and insecurity. “Nigeria continues to be a country of origin, transit, and destination currently hosting asylum seekers and refugees (over 109,000 individuals from 41 countries),” the agency said.
The report highlighted that under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the government is working with humanitarian and development partners to improve conditions for displaced persons. UNHCR plans to shift from blanket in-kind assistance to supporting access to government services, livelihood opportunities, and cash-based initiatives.
According to the agency, the new approach will enhance sustainability and empower refugee-led and community-based organisations to deliver critical services.
