Nigeria spends N1.3trn on debt servicing in two months as capital expenditure hits zero

A review of Nigeria’s January 2025 economic report reveals the federal government spent a staggering N1.3 trillion on debt servicing between December 2024 and January 2025 – exceeding its monthly budgeted average of N689 billion. The Central Bank of Nigeria’s data shows identical payments of N696 billion in both months, underscoring the Tinubu administration’s growing reliance on borrowing amid fiscal constraints.

The report highlights an alarming trend with zero naira allocated to capital expenditure in January 2025, raising concerns about infrastructure investment stagnation. Economic analysts warn this debt servicing pattern could cripple development projects as loan obligations consume increasing portions of government revenue.
