Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed fresh agreements to enhance cooperation on deportations, visa reforms, organised crime, and financial crime at the 2025 Migration, Justice, and Home Affairs Dialogue in Abuja.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed new agreements to boost cooperation on deportations, visa reforms, criminal justice, and financial crime during the 2025 Migration, Justice, and Home Affairs Dialogue held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The joint communiqué, signed by Ambassador Asari Allotey for Nigeria and Ambassador Asim Hafeez for the UK, was released to journalists on Friday. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to return individuals without legal status in each other’s territories. “Returning those that no longer have a legal right to remain in the UK is a top priority,” the UK delegation stated.

The UK also updated Nigeria on its e-visa rollout and pledged support for Nigerian business travellers, while Nigeria agreed to share progress on its own e-visa system.

A new Memorandum of Understanding on Organised Immigration Crime is expected soon, alongside expanded training for Nigerian immigration officers. Both countries also agreed to strengthen collaboration on human trafficking, extradition, and prisoner transfers, while pledging continued joint efforts against illicit financial flows and kleptocracy.

The next annual Migration, Justice, and Home Affairs Dialogue will be held in the United Kingdom in 2026.
