Nigeria is in talks to certify Chinese COMAC jets for domestic flights, aiming to expand trade ties while ensuring strict safety reviews

Nigeria is weighing plans to certify Chinese-made aircraft for use by its domestic airlines, officials said Monday, signaling a potential shift in the country’s aviation partnerships. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed it is in talks with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the state-owned manufacturer seeking to challenge Western rivals in global aircraft sales.

Approvals could take several months as regulators evaluate safety and maintenance standards. NCAA Director-General Chris Najomo told Reuters that Abuja has requested COMAC provide “dry lease agreements”—aircraft without crew—to interested local operators to reduce upfront costs.

Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said earlier this month that Nigeria is pursuing “strategic autonomy” through pragmatic trade alliances. A deal with COMAC would deepen China-Nigeria ties after billions of dollars in Chinese investment in rail and infrastructure projects.

Analysts note that Chinese involvement could diversify Nigeria’s aviation sector but stress the importance of rigorous safety certification before any flights begin.
