A 33-year-old Nigerian man, Lucius Njoku, has been sentenced in the UK for using a woman’s identity to work as a nurse in an NHS hospital.

A Nigerian man, Lucius Njoku, has been sentenced in the UK for using his female friend’s identity to work as a nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire.

Njoku, 33, posed as agency nurse Joyce George, wearing her NHS badge and photo while working multiple shifts undetected between February and April 2024. The deception was exposed after a patient questioned his identity, prompting an internal review.

At Chester Magistrates’ Court, Njoku admitted fraud by false representation and received a 16-week suspended sentence, 80 hours of unpaid work, and £239 in costs.

District Judge Jack McGarva said: “You deceived your way into a job which requires safeguarding checks and you bypassed those checks.”

His accomplice, George, reportedly fled to Nigeria after being charged. Police found messages linking both to the scheme. It is unclear whether Njoku will face deportation.
