FG Bans Establishment of New Federal Tertiary Institutions for Seven Years

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal tertiary institutions, including universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the decision on Wednesday after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu. He said the move was aimed at addressing declining infrastructure and workforce quality in existing institutions.

According to Alausa, some federal universities have more staff than students, which creates inefficiencies and waste.


Tinubu to Embark on Two-Nation Trip to Japan, Brazil

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday for visits to Japan and Brazil, with a stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, said in a statement that the trip will involve high-level engagements to strengthen bilateral relations and explore economic opportunities.


Kano Assembly Suspends Rano LG Chairman Over Misconduct Allegations

The Kano State House of Assembly has suspended the Chairman of Rano Local Government, Muhammad Nazir Yau, for three months to allow for investigations into alleged misconduct, abuse of office, and misappropriation of funds.

The decision followed the submission of an interim report by the House Committee on Public Petition on Wednesday.


Obasanjo Library Demands ₦3.5bn from EFCC Over Alleged Invasion

The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) seven days to pay ₦3.5 billion in damages over an August 10 raid on its premises.

Managing Director Vitalis Ortese said the EFCC’s actions caused reputational and financial harm to the library and its founder, former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He warned that the matter will be taken to court if the demand is not met by August 20.


FG Reduces KWAM 1 Flight Ban to One Month

The Federal Government has reduced the six-month flight ban on Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, to one month.

Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, announced that criminal complaints against KWAM 1 had been withdrawn and that pilots involved in a related incident will have their licenses restored after mandatory re-appraisal.


DSS Arrests Terrorist Leader in Niger State

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Abubakar Abba, suspected leader of the Mahmuda terrorist group, which has been active in Niger and Kwara States.

Security sources said the group has been responsible for a series of attacks in Borgu Local Government Area and surrounding communities in recent months.


Imo Pastor, Accomplice Arrested for Alleged Rape

Police in Imo State have arrested Pastor Ikenna Emmanuel for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman in Orlu.

The suspect was arrested alongside Franklin Chizoba, alleged to have aided the crime. Police say both men are in custody while investigations continue.


Tinubu Orders Review of Revenue Deductions by Major Agencies

President Bola Tinubu has directed a review of deductions and revenue retention practices by major revenue-generating agencies, including the FIRS, Nigeria Customs Service, NIMASA, and NNPC Limited.

The move aims to boost public savings, improve spending efficiency, and free up resources for economic growth.


Man Stabs Father to Death in Imo Over Land Sale Proceeds

The Imo State Police Command has arrested 39-year-old Ifeanyi Odinka for allegedly stabbing his 75-year-old father, Dennis Odinka, to death in Orlu.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will screen over 500 underage candidates who excelled in the 2025 UTME for possible admission into tertiary institutions.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, said the screening will take place from September 22 to 26 in Lagos, Owerri, and Abuja.
