“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who lost his life in the course of the ordeal,” the diocese added.

Two teenage seminarians have been released nearly four months after being kidnapped from the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi, southern Nigeria. A third seminarian was killed in captivity, the Diocese of Auchi announced.

“We are grateful to God for the safe release of Japhet Jesse much earlier and, most recently, Joshua Aleobua, who regained his freedom on November 4, 2025,” the diocese said in a statement.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of seminarian Emmanuel Alabi, who lost his life in the course of the ordeal,” it added.

The teenagers, aged between 14 and 17, were abducted on July 10 when armed men believed to be Fulani herdsmen attacked the seminary, killing a security guard.

Bishop Gabriel Dunia of Auchi “expressed his deep pain and sorrow” and urged security agencies to intensify protection efforts. He also cautioned political leaders against ignoring Nigeria’s worsening insecurity ahead of the 2027 elections.
