Nigerian telecom users consumed a record 1.04 million terabytes of data in May 2025, despite a decline in internet subscriptions, according to new figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
This marks the highest monthly data usage since the NCC began publishing such records in January 2023.

However, total internet subscriptions dropped to 141.5 million in May from 141.9 million in April, following a 50% data price hike by telecom operators.
MTN and 9mobile led the subscription losses, shedding over 500,000 users combined.
Conversely, Airtel gained over 342,000 new subscribers, while Globacom’s numbers remained unchanged.
Despite the dip, MTN retained a 52.33% market share, followed by Airtel with 34.17%.
Nigeria’s teledensity also fell slightly to 79.65% from 79.78% in April, based on a national population estimate of 216 million.
