There is an urgent need for reforms in INEC and also judicial reforms.”

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, legal experts, civil society leaders, and political observers are urging constitutional reforms to ensure credible polls.

A major demand is the removal of presidential powers over the judiciary and INEC. Cleric Alaowei of CHURAC stated, “To free the judiciary and INEC from executive arm control, a constitutional amendment is required.” Activist Stephen Adewale warned that without sweeping reform, the 2027 elections “will not just be flawed, they will be a farce.” Eric Omare, former IYC president, emphasized, “There is an urgent need for reforms in INEC and also judicial reforms.”

Former minister Prof. Madubuike expressed concern that “antecedents of both bodies had made them lose public confidence.” While many called out the judiciary and INEC, others like NLC President Joe Ajaero blamed politicians, saying, “Democracy is kept in abeyance.” Legal voices stressed that unless institutional independence and electoral justice are guaranteed, public trust in the process will continue to erode.
