World Bank President Ajay Banga says Nigeria’s population will grow by about 130 million by 2050, firmly placing the country among the world’s most populous nations.
World Bank President Ajay Banga has projected that Nigeria’s population will increase by about 130 million by 2050.
Speaking during the 2025 Annual Meetings of the IMF and World Bank, Banga said the rise would cement Nigeria’s position among the world’s most populous countries.
“Nigeria will swell by about 130 million, firmly establishing itself as one of the most populous nations in the world,” he stated.
He noted that Africa remains the fastest-growing region demographically, with Zambia and Mozambique also expected to record major population gains.
Banga described the trend as “one of the great demographic shifts in human history,” warning that by 2050, over 85 percent of the world’s population would live in developing nations.
He cautioned that failure to create jobs for the growing youth population could lead to “instability, unrest, and mass migration,” stressing that employment must remain central to every development and security strategy.
