Despite mounting questions and billions spent, neither his office nor the Ministry of Petroleum has communicated transparently with the public or the press.

Despite billions spent on repairs, Nigeria’s Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries remain non-functional, with President Bola Tinubu yet to address the setbacks.

Nigeria’s multibillion-dollar refineries have failed to deliver despite massive rehabilitation funds, raising concerns over transparency and accountability. The Warri Refinery, which cost $656.9million,shutdown barely a month after former NNPCCEO Mele Kyari declared it operational. Similarly, the PortHarcourt refinery, allocated $1.5 billion, operated at just 37% capacity before halting in January due to safety issues. Meanwhile, the Kaduna Refinery’s $740.6 million repair remains under scrutiny.

During a March Senate hearing, lawmakers criticized NNPC’s lack of transparency, but petroleum ministry officials skipped the session. Kyari had earlier claimed, “We have proved that it is possible to restart a plant that you deliberately shut down,” yet the refineries remain idle. Despite mounting public distrust, Tinubu, who serves as petroleum minister, has not provided any updates or explanations for the failures.
