Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring that he has been part of the coalition from its inception. Speaking at a gathering in Enugu, Obi described 2026 as the beginning of “a journey to rescue our country,” stressing the need for unity among opposition forces. He was joined by several prominent politicians, including Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, and Tony Nwoye, alongside former Labour Party House of Representatives members led by Victor Ogene and YPP lawmaker Peter Uzokwe.
Also defecting to the ADC with Obi were former Imo State governors Emeka Ihedioha and Achike Udenwa, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as Senator Sam Egwu, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Gil Nnaji, and Enugu State lawmaker Harrison Ogara. Obi lamented that individuals who once benefited from democracy are now undermining it, pledging that the ADC would stand firm against such actions. He vowed that the party would resist any attempt to rig the 2027 elections and criticised Nigeria’s economic downturn and mounting debt burden, which he attributed to incessant borrowing.
