The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has accredited 27 registered shipyards for operations across the country. The move aligns with the Agency’s mandate under Section 22 of the NIMASA Act, 2007, and sections 335–339 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2007, empowering it to regulate, licence, inspect, and enforce standards in shipyard operations.

Of the accredited facilities, 10 are located in Lagos State, eight in Rivers State, and nine in Delta State. Releasing the list in Lagos, NIMASA Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the accreditation drive aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency in the maritime sector.

“Our goal is to ensure that every shipyard operating in Nigeria adheres to international standards of safety, environmental protection, and operational efficiency,” he stated.

The Agency said vessels built in the accredited yards would receive Keel Identification Numbers, making them eligible for IMO registration. The accreditation process, it added, remains continuous.
