NIMC has disowned a fake correction portal scamming Nigerians for personal data, days after FIJ exposed NIN data sales and suffered cyberattacks linked to NIMC headquarters.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against using an unauthorised website, https://gvly.xyz/Name-Correction-link, which falsely claims to offer corrections for the National Identity Number (NIN).
In a Monday alert, NIMC spokesperson Kayode Adegoke said the Commission “was not affiliated with any unauthorised websites,” urging Nigerians to “always verify information through official channels to protect your identity and data.”
An investigation by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) revealed that the fake portal redirects users to another site titled NIMC CORRECTION PORTAL 2025. It advertises services such as name, date of birth, and phone number corrections, as well as NIN retrievals, while luring users into entering personal details.
The scheme pressures users to share the fraudulent page on WhatsApp before allegedly receiving “confirmation SMS and email.” FIJ declined to proceed further over security concerns.
The warning comes days after FIJ’s website suffered cyberattacks traceable to NIMC headquarters following reports exposing illegal sales of NIN data online.
