NiMet warns of July floods in 20 states despite N620bn ecological fund

The warning comes amid national outrage over the poor disaster preparedness of states despite receiving over N620bn in ecological funds since 2012.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Monday issued a flash flood alert for July, identifying 20 states including Lagos, Sokoto, Edo, and Benue as high-risk zones.

The warning comes amid national outrage over the poor disaster preparedness of states despite receiving over N620bn in ecological funds since 2012.

Environmental experts and advocacy groups have criticised the lack of transparency and accountability in how states manage the funds, calling for urgent audits and structural reforms.

“The government claims to be trying, but frankly, we don’t see the impact on society,” said Afolabi Abiodun, President of the Africa Environmental Health Organisation.

Flooding last week in Ondo State damaged properties across Okitipupa and Owo, while Niger and Zamfara states recorded fatalities and mass displacement.

NiMet urged residents to clear drainage systems, prepare emergency kits, and relocate from flood-prone areas.

Analysts warn that unless ecological funds are better managed, Nigeria will remain vulnerable to seasonal disasters worsened by climate change.
