The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas ( will begin a nationwide strike September 8 over alleged anti-union recruitment tied to Dangote’s new CNG trucks.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has announced a nationwide strike beginning Monday, September 8, 2025, in protest against alleged anti-union practices linked to the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks by Dangote Refinery.

In a statement signed by National President Prince Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, NUPENG accused Dangote of recruiting drivers on the condition that they would not join existing unions. “This requirement does not align with Nigeria’s Constitution, labour legislation, or international conventions on freedom of association,” the union said.

The union cited Section 40 of the Constitution, Section 9(6) of the Labour Act, and ILO Convention 87 as guarantees of workers’ rights. NUPENG appealed to the Federal Government and regulatory authorities to intervene but said dialogue had failed.

It assured the public the strike is aimed at safeguarding labour rights, not creating hardship, and urged solidarity from the NLC and TUC.
