NUPENG has described Dangote refinery’s free petrol supply as a “Greek gift,” alleging attempts to weaken its union and sideline other employers.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has described the Dangote refinery’s free petrol distribution as a “Greek gift.”

On Thursday, the refinery announced it would begin direct supply of petrol to 11 states at no cost. But in a statement signed by NUPENG president, Williams Akporeha, and general secretary, Afolabi Olawale, the union claimed the move was designed to edge out other petroleum truck driver employers.

“Nigerians should not be deceived by the offer of free nationwide delivery of petroleum products to dispensing stations. It is a GREEK GIFT… Everything is targeted at crushing NUPENG and its PTD Branch,” the statement read.

NUPENG further accused the refinery of obstructing workers’ union rights and sponsoring division within its Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch. The union urged Nigerians not to support arrangements that deny Dangote workers freedom of association.

On its part, Dangote refinery dismissed the allegations as “unfounded fabricated lies.”
