Nursing Council directs institutions to accept Islamic certificates for nursing admission

The Council emphasised that SAISSCE stands alongside other officially recognised certificates such as the WAEC and NECO SSCE for admission purposes.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has reinforced the acceptance of the Senior Arabic and Islamic Secondary School Certificate Examination (SAISSCE) as a valid qualification for nursing programmes. In a circular signed by acting Registrar Ndagi Alhassan, the Council stated that SAISSCE holds equal standing with WAEC and NECO certificates, citing a 2011 Federal Government approval. The directive, sent to health commissioners and academic institutions, aims to promote inclusivity in nursing education.

However, the move has drawn criticism from stakeholders who argue it undermines Nigeria’s secular ethos. “This is wrong. Accepting Islamic school results for admission instead of WAEC or NECO,” a concerned stakeholder lamented. Critics fear the policy could exacerbate regional educational disparities and favour northern states where SAISSCE is more prevalent.

The NMCN urged compliance, emphasising alignment with global best practices. Despite assurances, the directive has ignited fresh debates over the balance between inclusivity and secularism in Nigeria’s education system. Authorities are yet to respond to the growing backlash.
