Fried foods contain harmful compounds like acrylamide that can negatively affect brain health.

Nutrition experts have raised alarm over the frequent intake of fried foods, warning that it may contribute to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Speaking with PUNCH Healthwise, they cited both clinical observations and scientific studies linking fried foods to harmful effects on brain function.

Nutritionist Similoluwa Olorunleke explained, “Excessive intake of fried foods increases the risk of obesity, hyperlipidaemia, and other cardiovascular issues such as atherosclerosis, which could lead to ischaemic stroke,” adding that these physical complications often impact mental health.

Olorunleke further stated that fried foods reduce satiety, encouraging overeating—a habit associated with anxiety and depression. She stressed the benefits of healthy fats and nutrient-preserving cooking methods.

Specialist dietitian Deborah Onoja warned that “frequent consumption of fried foods is particularly dangerous when unhealthy oils and large portions are involved,” noting increased risks of obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

A Chinese study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found individuals who frequently consumed fried foods were 12% more likely to develop anxiety and 7% more likely to suffer from depression over 11 years. Acrylamide, a chemical formed in high-heat cooking, was identified as a key factor.
