NYSC is not an irresponsible organisation; we work with rules and regulations.
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied reports that it extended the service year of corps member Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as “Raye,” as punishment for criticising President Bola Tinubu.
Carol Embu, Acting Director of Press and Public Relations, clarified that such an extension would not be possible while a corps member is still serving. “Who is Sowore? Does he work with the NYSC? … I don’t understand how she will get an extension if she is still serving. NYSC is not an irresponsible organisation; we work with rules and regulations. She is still serving; if she has any issues, we will wait and see,” she said.
Raye had gone viral after posting a TikTok video where she criticised Tinubu and described Lagos as a “smelly state.” The video drew public reactions and claims from activist Omoyele Sowore, who alleged the NYSC extended her service year punitively—an assertion NYSC firmly denied.
