The Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) has confirmed the death of one of its members, who allegedly took his own life shortly after examination results were released.
In a statement signed by IFUDSA President, Adebayo Idris, the association described the incident as “a devastating loss” and “a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face.”
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read. “We encourage all members of our faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”
The association pledged to advocate for improved student welfare and mental health support.
Similar tragedies have been reported at OAU in recent years, including the 2021 suicide of a 200-level Accounting student and the 2019 death of an English and Literature student, both linked to pesticide ingestion.
