Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, planned to eliminate him, Chief MKO Abiola, and General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua to consolidate his grip on power.

Speaking at the dedication of “The Noah’s Ark” Assemblies of God Church in Aboh Mbaise, Imo State, Obasanjo said only God’s grace saved him.

“When I was arrested… Abacha had decided that some of us must be liquidated… He boasted that three of us will not come out of detention or prison alive,” Obasanjo stated. “Two of the three did not come out alive. I did, not by my power, but by the special grace of God.”

The former president, who commissioned the church built by philanthropist Obioma Success Akagburuonye, emphasized that his survival was not due to merit but divine favour.

“If anybody can claim to enjoy the amazing grace of God, I can,” he added.

Obasanjo also recalled narrowly escaping death multiple times and urged continued appreciation of God’s grace. He paid tribute to Akagburuonye’s 104-year-old mother, kneeling before her and saying he was tapping into the “grace of long life.”
