Obasanjo’s 2018 coalition adopted ADC but disbanded before the polls

In 2018, former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 elections.

Obasanjo unveiled the move during a May 10 press conference, calling ADC “a renewed and reinvigorated” party to bring about “desirable change in the Nigerian polity and governance.”

Olagunsoye Oyinlola, co-convener of CNM, described the merger as “the first in a multi-layered action plan to give back the country to its much-deprived people.”

However, the alliance collapsed within three months. In August, a CNM faction withdrew, forming the New African Democratic Congress (N-ADC).

Protem chairman Precious Elekima cited ADC’s decision to join the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) without consultation as the reason for the split.

He said this contradicted Obasanjo’s call to reject both PDP and APC.

Despite the coalition’s efforts, Buhari was re-elected in 2019.
