Obi wants Tinubu, governors to undergo certificate verification amid forgery concerns

Obi says INEC must verify academic credentials of all elected officials to restore transparency.

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu, governors, and other elected officials to submit their academic certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission for immediate verification.

“INEC has enough time to investigate past complaints about various forms of forgery and false claims,” he said. “Every incumbent and aspiring candidate must submit all academic certificates immediately for verification and public accessibility, clearly detailing schools attended from primary to university level.”

Mr Obi made the remarks on Thursday following the resignation of Minister of Science and Technology Geoffrey Uche Nnaji after his certificate forgery was exposed.

He described Mr Nnaji’s exit as “commendable” and “honourable,” adding that forgery is a serious criminal offence.

“As we approach the 2027 general elections, INEC and all relevant agencies must verify all academic and professional certificates of every candidate—from the President down to councillors,” Mr Obi said.
