Deji Adeyanju accused Peter Obi of an attempted bribe and labelled him a “political fraud,” while Obi’s lawyers threatened legal action over alleged defamation
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has accused former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi of attempting to bribe him during the buildup to the 2023 elections. Speaking on Channels Television, Adeyanju claimed Obi once offered him an envelope of money at a private meeting, which he rejected. “I laughed and told him he didn’t know me. I don’t collect such things,” he said. Adeyanju further described Obi as “a political fraud” and “political prostitute,” citing his movement across different parties.
The activist also criticised Obi’s supporters, known as “Obidients,” calling them intolerant and toxic. “Obidient mobs became practically uncontrollable. They threatened judges, harassed artists, insulted Prof. Wole Soyinka, and attacked anyone who criticised Obi,” he said.
Obi’s lawyers have since demanded a public retraction and apology from Adeyanju, describing his comments as “false and malicious.” They warned of a defamation lawsuit if he fails to comply. Adeyanju dismissed the threat, insisting, “If he wants to do his worst, let him.”
