“Mogajis from Ogbomoso and Ibadan have rejected a bill seeking to make the Alaafin of Oyo permanent chairman of Oyo State’s traditional rulers’ council, calling it a distortion of history.”

The Mogajis of Soun Ruling Houses in Ogbomoso have joined Ibadan leaders in opposing a bill to make the Alaafin of Oyo permanent chairman of Oyo State’s Council of Obas. They argued that the rotational chairmanship system reflects fairness and tradition. “This amendment distorts history and disrespects our institutions,” the Mogajis stated after protesting at the State Assembly.

The controversial bill, which passed second reading on May 15, proposes the Alaafin as permanent chairman, the Olubadan of Ibadan as deputy, and the Soun of Ogbomoso as vice chairman. Last week, Ibadan leaders similarly rejected the move, insisting on rotation among the three monarchs.

Governor Seyi Makinde’s assent would abolish rotation, but critics warn it could reignite supremacy conflicts among traditional rulers. The bill is now with the House Committee on Chieftaincy Matters for review before final deliberations.
