Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos has condemned the political marginalisation of Igbos in local government elections, citing their heavy investments in the state.

The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos State, Dr. Solomon Ogbonna Aguene, has decried the political marginalisation of Igbos in local governance despite their significant economic contributions.

Speaking from his Ikoyi residence on Saturday during an assessment of the local government elections, Aguene said, “Do you know that the Igbo that are resident in Lagos State are denied the opportunity to vote? This is not just happening in this election; it occurs during every cycle.”

He added that Igbos are routinely excluded from contesting for chairmanship and councillorship positions. “Igbos are the ones investing heavily in Lagos. They are supposed to be given the opportunity to hold some positions in the state,” he stressed.

Aguene described the situation as undemocratic: “It is therefore safe to conclude that we don’t have democracy in Nigeria… What we have is opportunists grabbing power and ruling.” He also lamented the worsening economic conditions affecting essential workers across the country.
