“Still, in retrospect, I now believe I should have gone with the will of my people.” — Okowa

Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has admitted he regrets accepting the role of vice-presidential candidate alongside Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 general election. Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Okowa said his decision contradicted the sentiments of his people.

“Even when we were campaigning, I realised our people were not interested in having another northerner come into power… Still, in retrospect, I now believe I should have gone with the will of my people,” he said.

Okowa linked the PDP’s poor presidential showing in Delta to that misalignment but noted the party rebounded weeks later during the governorship election. He defended his record and recent defection to the APC as a pragmatic choice after consultations.

“Yes, I was a key player in the PDP… but the PDP of today is not the same party we built in 1998,” he said.

On EFCC matters, he clarified: “I have never spoken to Adams Oshiomhole… I did well for the people of the state.”
