Ondo State Government has banned elaborate graduation ceremonies for nursery and JSS students as part of reforms to sanitise the education sector.
Ondo State Government has banned elaborate graduation ceremonies for nursery and Junior Secondary School students as schools prepare for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ meeting with private school owners across the state’s 18 LGAs.
“Ondo State has to step in to ban elaborate graduation ceremonies, especially for nursery and JSS classes,” Ajibefun said, noting that such events distract from academic focus.
The meeting also resolved to enforce re-accreditation of private schools, stop unregistered schools, ensure compliance with the approved curriculum and school calendar, and regulate excursions for security reasons.
Ajibefun added that illegal schools have six months to obtain approval and warned against underage admissions and foreign curricula. He emphasised the reuse of textbooks and revealed plans to digitise all primary and secondary schools.
He stressed that schools failing to meet minimum standards “should find another business.”
