Ondo police arrested a pastor and his wife for allegedly staging her kidnap to extort N10 million from relatives abroad.
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old woman, Mrs. Sanmori Taiwo, and her 62-year-old husband, Pastor Sanmori Olubumi Joshua, for allegedly staging her abduction to extort N10 million from relatives abroad.
Police spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade said on Wednesday in Akure that the incident occurred on August 23 at the couple’s residence in Ondo City. According to him, Taiwo secluded herself in a room while her husband contacted her relatives, claiming she had been kidnapped by armed men demanding ransom.
Suspicious of the claims, a relative petitioned the police, prompting the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad and Enu-owa Division officers to raid the residence, where Taiwo was found.
She initially claimed kidnappers had freed her after a N5 million payment but later confessed to faking the abduction to settle debts and fund personal needs.
Ayanlade said both suspects are under investigation and assured that the police will expose all forms of criminality in the state.
