“Government should assist us in overcoming these challenges and encourage stakeholders to utilise the port.”

The Manager of Onitsha River Port, Mr Osazuwa, says the facility could generate up to N100 billion annually if fully operational. He stated this on Friday in Onitsha during an interview, following the berthing of a barge—the first in 2025—loaded with tiles from Ajaokuta, Kogi State.

Osazuwa described the arrival as a success story worth emulating to reduce transport costs. He listed insecurity, low patronage, and dredging delays on the River Niger as key challenges. “Government should assist us in overcoming these challenges and encourage stakeholders to utilise the port,” he said.

He added that militant youths and pirates hamper operations, stressing that dredging and incentives would ease goods movement and unlock the port’s vast economic potential.
