OpenAI has launched Atlas, an AI-driven browser powered by ChatGPT, featuring an autonomous assistant called Agent that can navigate pages, perform tasks, and enhance user productivity.
OpenAI has unveiled Atlas, a groundbreaking AI-powered web browser that integrates ChatGPT to offer a highly personalized and interactive browsing experience.
Among its standout features is Agent, an AI assistant capable of performing tasks such as organizing shopping lists, commenting on Google Docs, and even controlling the mouse to navigate web pages autonomously. According to the development team, Agent was designed to “make it feel like it was coming alive” while remaining under user supervision.
Agent can operate in the background, with a “Relevant Tabs” sidebar showing its activity. It can also detect when assistance is needed, prompting users to delegate tasks. Developers stressed that Agent’s control is limited to the Atlas browser and cannot execute code or access stored files.
Atlas also features SideChat, a tool for summarizing Slack conversations, comparing products, and analyzing webpages. Another function allows users to search browser history through remembered content instead of URLs.
Lead engineer Ben Goodger described ChatGPT as “the beating heart of Atlas,” while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said AI represents the “next step forward” for web browsing.
Atlas, which runs on Chromium, launches today exclusively on macOS and will soon be available for Windows, iOS, and Android.
