OpenAI readies AI browser to take on Google Chrome

Is Google Chrome’s reign coming to an end? Moments after Perplexity AI debuts its first browser, Reuters reports OpenAI is releasing one in a few weeks.

OpenAI is entering the browser wars with an AI-powered alternative to Chrome, aiming to redefine web navigation using ChatGPT’s capabilities.

OpenAI is developing an AI-powered web browser to rival Google Chrome, with a potential release in coming weeks, according to Reuters. The browser—similar to Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia—will use AI to reimagine web navigation, keeping some interactions within ChatGPT instead of redirecting to external sites.

It may feature Operator, OpenAI’s web-browsing AI agent, as a core function. (Rumors that the ChatGPT-maker was working on a browser first surfaced in November 2024. The product aims to change how users find information online, possibly using OpenAI’s AI agent called Operator).

The move aligns with OpenAI’s reported 2024 plans (per The Information) to bypass Google’s dominance, access user data directly, and innovate beyond traditional search intermediaries.
