OpenAI has entered a multi-year agreement with AMD to purchase AI chips while securing the option to acquire up to a 10 percent stake in the chipmaker
OpenAI announced Monday that it has sealed a sweeping multi-year partnership with AMD to procure artificial intelligence chips. Under the agreement, AMD will deliver computing capacity amounting to six gigawatts, with the first gigawatt deployment expected in the second half of 2026.
In a notable strategic move, AMD also issued OpenAI a warrant to purchase up to 160 million shares — roughly a 10 percent equity stake — at $0.01 per share, contingent on various performance and deployment milestones.
AMD executives forecast that the deal could generate tens of billions in annual revenue and spark over $100 billion in new income over four years from OpenAI and related customers.
“This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI’s full potential,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
