The government says AI will be “fundamental” in driving change in areas such as the NHS, defence and education.

The UK government has signed a partnership with OpenAI to explore how artificial intelligence can improve services in sectors such as education, defence, and justice.

According to the agreement, OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT, will collaborate on using AI to make public services “more efficient and effective” while investing in the UK’s AI infrastructure, including data centres and regional “growth zones.”

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said, “AI will be fundamental in driving the change we need to see across the country – whether that’s in fixing the NHS, breaking down barriers to opportunity or driving economic growth.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman added, “AI is a core technology for nation building that will transform economies and deliver growth.” He praised the UK’s early adoption of AI and called for action to turn ambitions into prosperity.

Critics, including creatives, have raised concerns over AI’s impact on jobs, water usage for data centres, and high energy demand.

OpenAI also plans to expand its London office, the company’s first international branch.
