Why OpenAI is making a full-length AI movie

OpenAI is making Critterz to prove AI can create full-length films and accelerate its adoption in Hollywood.

OpenAI is backing the creation of Critterz, an animated feature made largely with artificial intelligence, with plans for its debut at the Cannes Film Festival next May, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The project is not only about storytelling but also about proving AI’s potential in the film industry. From OpenAI’s perspective, success would demonstrate that artificial intelligence can deliver high-quality content for the big screen and encourage wider adoption of the technology in Hollywood.

Chad Nelson, a creative specialist at OpenAI and the creator of the original short version of Critterz, said the company wants to show AI’s capabilities in practice rather than through demonstrations. “OpenAI can say what its tools do all day long, but it’s much more impactful if someone does it,” Nelson explained. “That’s a much better case study than my building a demo.”

Production is already underway, with completion targeted in nine months instead of the typical three years.
