Nigeria’s opposition coalition is considering former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi as a potential 2027 consensus presidential candidate, sources reveal. The move follows Peter Obi’s insistence on retaining his 2023 running mate and Atiku Abubakar’s reluctance to step aside. Amaechi, who opposed Tinubu’s 2023 bid, tested presidential waters during his 60th birthday lecture, criticizing the administration’s national unity record.

A coalition source told The Guardian“With Atiku and Obi unwilling to compromise, Amaechi’s APC primary runner-up status makes him a viable alternative.” The ex-minister had previously warned Tinubu “lacks capacity to unify Nigeria.”
