Opposition coalition orders members to quit parties, join ADC

The African Democratic Congress has ordered coalition members to quit their parties and join it ahead of 2027, but the APC, PDP and NNPP dismissed the directive as posing no threat.

The opposition coalition has directed its members to resign from their political parties and fully join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, though no deadline was given.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, announced the resolution on Thursday in Abuja after a caucus meeting attended by senior figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governors Nasir El-Rufai, Aminu Tambuwal and Chibuike Amaechi.

Abdullahi said, “Though final order has been given to all members to resign membership of other political parties, the caucus was silent on the timeline.” He added that issues around the proposed African Democratic Alliance had been “rested,” with presidential aspirants agreeing to support whoever emerges from ADC primaries.

But the APC, PDP and NNPP dismissed the move as inconsequential. APC spokesman Bala Ibrahim said, “This is nothing to frighten or put the APC in any state of embarrassment… the ADC does not have the strength to rattle the APC.”

PDP youth leader Timothy Osadolor welcomed the directive as an opportunity for clarity of membership, while NNPP’s Ladipo Johnson likened defections to a football “transfer window.”

Meanwhile, at a separate rally in Ogun State, former ADC chairman Ralph Nwosu urged Nigerians to obtain voter cards, vowing the party would “take over” in 2027 in line with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s projection.
