“When I put a lot of money at the time, by then, dollar was big money. Dollar was $84. I gave President Olusegun Obasanjo over $1 million. I gave the party (PDP) over N500 million to start the party. “

Former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu has revealed he donated $1 million to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s campaign and N500 million to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its formation in 1998. Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, the senator recalled: “Dollar was $84 then. I gave Obasanjo over $1 million and the party N500 million.

Only TY Danjuma and Atiku Abubakar could have brought such funds” 25. Kalu, now a businessman, emphasized his frustration with political infighting, urging leaders to focus on Nigerians’ welfare instead.

The lawmaker criticized the culture of verbal attacks among elites, stating: “Abusing Tinubu, Atiku, or Amaechi should stop. We must sit as a family and deliver for the people” .

He stressed priorities like food security and infrastructure, distancing himself from political gains: “I’ve lost more than I gained in politics”

Kalu’s disclosure revisits PDP’s early financial struggles and his role as a key financier, while advocating for bipartisan solutions to national challenges.
