Nigeria has made history with the first crude oil export from the Otakikpo onshore terminal, built by Green Energy International Ltd — the country’s first indigenous crude export facility in over 50 years.

Nigeria on Sunday, June 8, marked a major milestone with the first crude oil export from the Otakikpo onshore terminal, the country’s first indigenous crude export facility in over five decades.

Green Energy International Ltd (GEIL), operator of the Otakikpo field, confirmed the successful cargo lifting by Shell via the off-taker vessel MV at 14:00 hrs.

GEIL Chairman, Prof. Anthony Adegbulugbe, in a statement, credited the feat to divine grace, the resilience of the company’s indigenous staff, and support from regulatory agencies.

The terminal, completed in under two years, has an initial storage capacity of 750,000 barrels, expandable to 3 million, and a 360,000 barrels-per-day pumping capacity.

With over $400 million already invested and a full-phase projection of $1.3 billion, the terminal is designed to evacuate up to 250,000 bpd, including crude from nearby stranded fields.

Analysts hail the project as a game-changer, boosting local capacity and reducing reliance on offshore terminals.
