Kayode Emola, deputy national leader (Diaspora) of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, says that 141 of 193 countries now allow diaspora voting and argues Nigeria should adopt similar reforms to enfranchise its overseas citizens.

An expert has called on Nigeria to adopt diaspora voting, citing that 141 out of 193 countries globally currently allow it, a development he says the country should not ignore.

Kayode Emola, deputy national leader (Diaspora) of the Yoruba Self-Determination Movement, made the assertion during a recent diaspora town hall ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections. He argued: “We contribute significantly to the global economy and send billions in remittances home. It’s only fair that we have a say in who governs our country, our states, and even our local councils.”

Emola’s advocacy extends beyond voting rights to proposing formal diaspora representation in Nigeria’s legislature through continentally distributed reserved seats. “Diaspora voices must be part of the legislative process, not just heard during elections,” he said.

Addressing opposition and practical challenges, Emola stressed that electoral bodies and lawmakers must work together to pass an enabling law and ensure the process is “ethical and transparent.” He added: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way … If materials and personnel are prepared well in advance, we can run elections that Nigerians, home and abroad, can be proud of.”
