Over 31,000 students in Lagos State public schools have failed the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), raising concerns over education quality despite N1.5 billion government funding.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, revealed at the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing that 31,596 of the 58,188 sponsored students failed. “The state government is committed to relieving parents of the burden of exam fees,” he said. “But we must also prevent wastage by ensuring only qualified students benefit from this programme.” The government implemented biometric registration to ensure transparency and enrolled 56,134 students for the 2025 WASSCE. About 30,000 out-of-school children were also reenrolled in public schools. Alli-Balogun highlighted initiatives like the Eko Learners’ Support Programme and teacher welfare efforts, including N102.5 million in housing loans and 4,353 new teacher recruitments. He urged students to avoid vices and focus on productive activities supported by NGOs.
