The death toll from the Owode Onírin Spare Parts Market shooting has climbed to six, as grieving families intensify demands for justice.
The death toll from the August 27 police shooting at the Owode Onírin Spare Parts Market in Lagos has risen to six, intensifying demands for justice from bereaved families.
The incident began when four Mobile Policemen, reportedly led by one Abiodun Hakeem Ariori, stormed the market and opened fire indiscriminately, killing four traders instantly.
Ariori, initially declared wanted, later surrendered to authorities after the Lagos Police Command confirmed the arrest of the officers involved.
Two more victims who sustained critical injuries later died in hospital, the latest being Aderemi Adeoye, who passed away on September 1 after surgery and days on life support. Other victims were Seyi Akinboye, Taiwo Adeoye, Dare Mufutau, Abraham Temilola, and Wale Adebayo.
At a Lagos press conference, families narrated their anguish. Adeoye’s mother lamented, “He was my first son. His wife had just had a baby less than seven months ago. Now they’ve taken him from me.”
